It’s Time to Invest … in Yourself: Getting Started

Questions and steps to start you on your health journey


You’ve probably heard the expression: “The best offense is a good defense.” When it comes to health, this principle rings especially true. Protecting what you already have before trying to build on it is a wise approach.


We often think about insuring our homes, cars, or even our lives—but how often do we think

about protecting our health in the same way? Do you see your health as an asset? Something priceless, and nearly impossible to earn back once compromised? If so, what value would you place on it?


Think of your health like a bank account. Do you make daily deposits? Do you work to maintain a healthy balance? Do you anticipate moments when extra withdrawals will be required—times of higher energy demand?


These withdrawals can happen during travel, long flights, or when dealing with jet lag. They can happen at parties, holidays, weddings, or when caring for a newborn or a loved one. Even irregular work schedules or swing shifts can drain your reserves. All these situations place extra strain on your “health account.”


If this resonates with you, I encourage you to pause and take stock of your health. Is it where you want it to be? If not, why? What’s standing in your way? And if your health is in a sweet spot, what steps can you take to keep it there? What daily practices will protect and maintain it?


When I reflect on these questions for myself, I picture a “health and wellness pie” with many

slices:

  • Physical – I aim for at least two 30-minute HIIT training sessions each week, along with

    several walks. My goal is to increase this frequency by adding another studio session to

    my weekly routine.

  • Mental – I start each morning with quiet time, reading something inspirational (often the

    Bible) and reflecting on how it applies to my day. I also avoid over-scheduling, knowing

    that I need daily downtime.

  • Social – I prioritize weekly connections with close friends and family, and we share as

    many family dinners as possible.

  • Spiritual – My faith grounds me. I connect with God daily and nourish my spirit through

    creativity, music, art, design, and time in nature.


Of course, this list only scratches the surface of what contributes to true health and well-being.
